AVN and Geoff Thomas Foundation - helping to save lives Minimize

'Making it Count - Accountants Fighting Cancer' is a collaboration between AVN, Iris and AccountingWeb to help raise funds for the Geoff Thomas Foundation. There are numerous ways that AVN member firms can get involved and, as well as making a valuable contribution to the charity, it can help you to get publicity for your own firm.

The GTF was formed when Geoff’s life was saved by a bone marrow transplant after he was diagnosed with leukaemia.

OtherGTF logo patients aren’t so lucky and they need life-saving new drugs. The GTF aims to raise £20 million in 5 years to fund treatment trials at six world-class centres in Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge, Nottingham, Birmingham and London.

By 2015 the GTF hopes all blood cancer patients will have access to a potential cure.

London to Paris Cycle Challenge 2010 - are you brave enough to take it on?

The London-Paris 2010 cycle challenge is unique. It’s the only event where you get to ride like a professional cyclist in a multi-stage event with escorts in the UK, rolling road closures in France and technical support from a 100-strong back-up crew.

AVN's Mark Wickersham has tackled it twice now for GTF and has already signed up to do it again - what's more, he wants AVN members to do it with him! Though extremely challenging, it's a brilliant way to raise funds for GTF and also a fantastic personal achievement for those taking part.

If you're interested in finding out more just email tracy@avn.co.uk for further details. You'll need to be available from 24th - 27th June.

The EDF Birmingham Half Marathon October 2009

They did it!

Team GTF – including six of the AVN team – completed the Birmingham Half Marathon on 11th October and raised more than £700 for leukaemia research. It wasn’t easy but all the training paid off and everyone crossed the finishing line in one piece.
The times were:

Mark Wickersham – 1hr 31mins; Paul Flynn – 2hrs; Tracy Bettley - 2hrs 44 mins; Rachel Clark - 2hrs 44mins; Paul Herrett - 3hrs 1min; Ian Patterson – 3hrs 2mins.

Tracy commented: “8 weeks of training covering 94 miles and it was all worth it when I crossed the finishing line. I am so proud of myself for taking part and to get a time of 2hrs 44mins in just amazing. If you are wondering, I will not be doing another one, I am more a 10k runner: it just took a 13.1 mile race to find that out!”

Special mention too for Jonathan Holroyd who was unable to run in the half marathon but rowed the same distance on his rowing machine instead and raised £555.00 in the process - a fantastic achievement.
