If you have a modern machine which is dual-core or quad-core (that means it has more than one processor) and you use Word 2002 or earlier (like Word 2000, Word 97 etc) then there is a known issue which means that, according to Microsoft, programs that use Word can run up to 15 times slower. The only solution is to either be patient or install Word 2003 or above.
